Bio

Deneil Christian in Medellin, Colombia.

I am committed to developing the next generation of criminal justice professionals through rigorous teaching, research, and professional experience. My academic foundation is anchored by a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, and I bring a unique blend of convictions earned in the field and innovation in the classroom.

My law enforcement career began with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, where I served in various capacities, including intelligence, public information, mounted patrol, traffic enforcement, and special operations. I also served as a police officer in Louisiana, United States. My experience, including work with at-risk youth and juvenile offenders, fuels my teaching and research on juvenile justice, delinquency, corrections, and white-collar crime.

In K-12 education, I taught Business and Criminal Justice at an all-girls Catholic college-preparatory high school in Philadelphia. Since moving into higher education, I have held roles including tenure-track Assistant Professor, Teaching Assistant Professor (remote), Lead Faculty for online Criminal Justice programs, and Course Quality Assurance Coordinator. My undergraduate courses cover Law Enforcement, Juvenile Justice, White-Collar Crime, Corrections, and Homeland Security. At the graduate level, I teach Comparative Criminal Justice Systems, White Collar Crime, and Juvenile Delinquency & Juvenile Justice.

My research agenda encompasses juvenile justice, criminal justice education, and online teaching and learning, with recent publications focusing on the representation of white-collar and corporate crime in Jamaican criminal justice programs, juvenile correctional education, and the use of excessive force by juvenile correctional staff. I have published in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Youth Justice, the Journal of Criminal Justice and Law, and Interactive Learning Environments, among others.

I am proud to hold certifications that reflect my commitment to excellence in teaching and academic quality:

  • QM Peer Reviewer Certification (Quality Matters) – ensuring I apply best-practice course design principles in online and blended modalities.
  • ACUE Certification (Association of College & University Educators) – recognized for commitment to exceptional instructional practices.
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (Association of Certified Fraud Examiners) – a credential underlining my expertise in white-collar crime and corporate investigations.

My global perspective is grounded in lived experience: I have visited six continents and over 20 countries, lived in Jamaica, the United States, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and maintain a deep connection to Africa through multiple extended stays in Kenya (4x) and travel to Nigeria (3x), Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Trips to other continents include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. This diverse travel and cross-cultural engagement enrich my teaching of comparative justice systems and international security.
